But is Claire's mother supposed to be Sarah or Karen? My take was that Karen's baby was fathered by Martin (the reason she tries to kill him). When Sarah returns to the story, she is pregnant, and that's all we know at that point. And then Karen tells us that Sarah went to London with her "older lover"--who is this supposed to be? Martin? But Martin had been Karen's lover. The whole thing is so convoluted that I can't figure out who the real mother is, and that's frustrating to me as a reader.
