Frank D Not so. That's "sour grapes."

Maxine I agree with Linda C. The analogy of The Emperor's New Clothes is exactly the impression I had when I finally quit in literal disgust . Still resent the hour or so of my life that was wasted on this terrible--in fact actually nauseous pretense at writing.

Linda C Glad you like wasting your time on pages of stream of consciousness drivel, Frank. Don't let me stop you. As I said, MY OPINION. Now go drink more of the Joyce kool-aid.

Frank D Linda and Maxine, don't be so dismissive of what you were not able to comprehend. I spent 60 years on Ulysses, and it was worth it. I promise you that Joyce's Ulysses is literary gold, but you would be right about his Finnegans Wake, which is the pot of god at the end of the rainbow--pure blarney.

Kevin Bradshaw Frank D. I've read many a difficult book. Half through this one, there is a coherent story. But the book is rather bad and self indulgent. It's easy to read actually. Difficult to finish when do pointlessly long and vacuous.

Linda C It's not a matter of not comprehending. It's a matter of not wanting to waste my reading time on something that is both hard work and not worth it at the end of the day. But, as I said, only my opinion.

Jon I'm reading Dubliners and I do think Joyce is special and has a gift, but the benefit of Dubliners is that they are short stories and he gets to the point rather quickly. It sounds like if he lacks the restrictions of the short story he can get pretty far afield and self-indulgent.
