AmyAmy Wow, I never heard *that* interpretation. How mind-blowing! That would be interesting if the film version included that twist, but readers and viewers wouldn't appreciate that ending, I don't think. We all have too much compassion and sympathy for Eleanor. Also, Eleanor has a kind disposition.

Kathryn I wondered that at one point while reading but having finished I would say with certainty that is not part of the story and I agree with AmyAmy that I would not be happy to have it added.

Robin Werth As I was reading, all along I thought that we would discover that E. was the fire-starter and I must admit I was a little surprised that it wasn't her. Not sure if this is what the author intended or not, but either way, I loved this book from the first page to the last.

Lauren Davis I think if EO had started the fire (this did briefly occur to me as well) she would never have been placed in the regular foster care system. But it does strike me as odd that at age 30, social services is still tracking her, yet she's never been in counseling.

message 5: by Allison (new)

Allison I don’t think for a second that EO set the fire. She was just plagued by guilt that her 10-year old self had been unable to save her sister. She had taken on a care-taking / protective role against the mother but at such a young age it was impossible for her to completely protect her sister from Mummy’s evil doings.
