How do you know that ? I don't see anywhere that it is a fiction.
On the cover, it states "a novel." Thus presuming literary allowance based on personas actual or invented.
I actually have the French paperback edition, published by Julliard, and although it does label the book as "roman" (a novel) on the frontpage, there's no copyright page. Furthermore, in a interview by a French newspaper, asked "«Arrête avec tes mensonges» a été votre premier écrit autobiographique: a-t-il représenté une forme de thérapie?", the author stated: "C’est une histoire que j’ai porté en moi depuis trente ans, qui a irrigué beaucoup d’autres de mes livres. Elle m’a hanté longtemps, m’a construit et a fondé l’homme que je suis devenu et une partie de l’écrivain aussi. C’est une histoire matricielle et fondamentale. Le livre était une façon de rendre Thomas Andrieu encore vivant et présent au moment où j’apprenais sa disparition. Une façon de rendre hommage et aussi de raconter une époque, un lieu, le poids du déterminisme social et comment on était regardés quand on était homosexuel à 17 ans dans une petite ville de province. Avec l’espoir que ça ait changé et avec la crainte que ça n’ait pas beaucoup changé". I think it's thus safe to say that - if not everything - at least a lot of the story is based on true events.
