Terrie Thanks for your post. I was a little unhappy about the author leaving it up in the air, but then I thought, no. It's ok because they are actually talking through points that earlier in the book the two would just clam up, leave, interpret things incorrectly. In the last pages they were working through stuff. Not just reacting and leaving.

Monique I agree with you. My interpretation is that they finally realize that they belong together. They don't break up in the end. She says go and I'll be waiting here for you. And this is assuming he goes. He may choose not to. Throughout the book, every separation is due to miscommunication and insecurity. And yet they still find their way back to each other. The difference is this last time they depart with the firm knowledge and security that they truly love each other.

Kasia Thats a nice interpretation Monique :) I like that.

Mary Fusoni My even happier interpretation is that they go together to New York; lot of couple make such decisions, and Marianne is a brilliant woman who could find her way. So they start a new life together, away from the old places and old relationships that have haunted their past.

Maud Passini Oh, I didn't dare imagine such a happy ending! I though of one that is not as happy but more realistic (i think): for me, they realize that they will be okay, not matter what. They've grown and have accepted themselves thanks to one another's love and have realized that they have what it takes to go through life: 'for her, the pain of being lonely is nothing compared to the pain of feeling unworthy. They've done so much good for each other. People can really change one another.'
