Further into the book he actually admits he wasn't ready to face the truth. Later in the book, especially in his letter to Alva, he explains that he can withdraw himself so deep inside his head and thoughts, the ideas/stories/dreams he makes up become so real to him, he can't tell them apart from reality/finds them as true as reality.
