Janet I agree with your interpretation. I think it really diminishes the power of the first 10 chapters to say oh no he's really alive.

Michael Goddart This is one of the best comments and closest to my take. It's like a late, major processing of her grief: to create a fictional world with her friend in which she "betrays" him, only to recognize her true friend at the end of his days. (Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that most of the book is auto-fiction.)
