That's exactly how I felt about the book, you just put it into better words than I could have.
It is hard. At first I liked the ending, but the more I thought about it, she did take a human life. I think she thought she had no choice. But did she regret her choice.
"Gifted local poet"? I concur with Tate's opinion--which I believe echoes Owens's own--that her stuff is at best weak.
