your publisher squanders an opportunity. glitterland, in particular, would be a splendid audiobook.
I second what Julio says--your publisher is not actively pursuing the production of an audiobook? WTF not? I mean, Ash and Darian? It's screaming to be done--ahundjedpehcent (bad rendition of your lovely dialogue)!
We ARE actively pursuing the production of an audiobook. But to do it right takes expertise we do not have, and securing a deal with someone who does is not entirely in our hands and also generally a very slow process. We're working hard at it, but there are no guarantees.
well, that's heartening news! hopefully someone with expertise will arrive soon—speaking for myself, an audiobook version of this would have me doing cartwheels for joy
@Julio
Ironically I did actually have someone with expertise who was willing to do it but - as you can see - my publisher already have their own plans which aren't compatible with mine.
As they've said, audio books are a slow process so they might not not have managed to secure a deal by the time the Glitterland rights revert to me, which will mean I can pursue this opportunity then. Glitterland is, y'know, quite a specific book so while I would normally not be this invested in an audiobook the notion of having it narrated by a talented English actor ... is ... uh ... slightly too tempting :)
oh, man—i can't even tell you how excited i am at the prospect—but i can't help feel sad at the wait. how many more years before the rights revert back to you?
It might not happen - I mean four years, as you say, is a long time to wait so my interested party may have lost interest by then. But it's the 26th of August 2017, not that I'm counting or anything :)
*cries brokenly* i just don't understand. why can't everyone work together to make it happen? surely it's a project that benefits all parties. especially your fans :-(
sorry if i come off as petulant or entitled—it's just... the story is dear to me, and i know for a fact i'm not the only one who feels the same about it, either.
good luck :-(
Well, it's honestly quite a complicated situation in every possible way - it's not like anybody is being actively obstructive here. Well, me possibly - as they have something they're apparently doing, and I would very much rather do something else ;)
RP own the rights, I don't own the rights, they have something they want to do with the rights, I have some different I want to do - it's pretty clear cut :)
Nobody is the wrong here. And, actually, I have *no idea* what level of interest there might be in a GL audiobook. It could end up being a massive loss for everybody.
The only message here is, fight for everything you have kids, because you never know what's going to come up :) I normally steer clear of advice-type activities because what the hell do I know? But if I had to say one thing to aspiring/newly published writers it would be, never think "oh there probably won't..." Think "what if there will." Never assume limitations.
