Wrong. "It's not the author's job to make a great person you will like." It is the author's job to make people interesting. Unreliable narrators. Lost souls. Anti-heroes. You have to care about a character. I would walk away from Toby at a cocktail party after 5 minutes because I wouldn't care about him.
Interesting is in the eye of the beholder. Toby is a douche, but he's pretty damn interesting on the page.
