IvanOpinion Trebor's edit version is how I interpreted it.

But I also assumed they called Michael the Murderer because he "killed them" by leaving. The phrase is used in metaphorical senses throughout the book.

Trebor I think so too, I hadn't thought of that interpretation. Michael left right when the boys needed him the most.

Susan I think it's both. I also think Penny imagined/saw her father with her as Clay carried her to the garage.

Kelly There is a different section in the book where it says they began to call him him the Murderer because he left all the boys in the middle of the night.

Robin Brave I wondered if when he carried his mother into the garage full of CO he wore the clothes peg on his nose for protection? Then kept it in his pocket.
