In The Mortal World, I think that Paris is designated B395 or something like that, which got me thinking - how many worlds are there? Are there literally hundreds or even thousands for each letter? And how far along the alphabet does it go?
Or could it be a case of, for A, there are 900 alternative worlds, but for P, there are only 5...?

There are hundreds to thousands of worlds, but only 3 letter-designations: magic-dominant, tech-dominant, or mixed.
