As an African American that knows Aleatha as a friend along with being an author, I can assure you there is no racist overtone in this book. If you continue to read you will discover Jane is a lot more than just the maid. As a sensitivity editor for several authors . . . I know when they are using POC as a filler (and I call them out on it) or if they are a core part of the story. Just keep reading and you will see.
