Emily Gersema I agree. I think Calypso is the first time, too, that Sedaris has revealed more about the truth behind his relationship with his father - that it's been at times extremely adversarial and provocative. I felt, after the story he shared about his malicious decision to clog the toilet, that Sedaris struggled, as many children do, with the issue that he was not the favorite in the family, but without understanding that he was compounding the situation and making it all the more difficult to ever develop the bond he so apparently wished to have with his father. I think Sedaris does this with other people in his life, too, and although those anecdotes appear funny on the surface, I wonder why his humor is sometimes unkind.
