Patricia: She did not understand it while she lived it. She was able to put more of it into context as she grew up and away from it. Most people think their families are "normal" when they are growing up and only later come to realize that each family is unique. Many people in abusive settings like hers have to believe the lies and the gaslighting in order to survive and can only begin to peel away the illusions much later. Please educate yourself about this and have more compassion for those who have suffered such tremendous trauma.
