Thanks for the response! As I read your answer, scenes from the novels jumped into my head. I think this shows the depth of your characters and why we like them so much! A character that was strictly Lawful Good all the time could serve a purpose but would likely get a little boring to read and write about over time. For DMs, your answer shows how flexibility can add to the role playing experience by allowing players to have their characters struggle internally. In this respect, alignment is a guide and not an absolute. As an example, I would have the special powers of a paladin wax and wane depending on how closely he/she was adhering to the tenets of their order.
