This was my takeaway as well!
Paul has full on conversations with Claire, so I think they are different people. Not to mention the fact Claire has a husband which we do see as does Paul, and there are the twins as well.
I had that exact same thought throughout the book...Does Amber/Clair have multiple personalities.
No! Then there would be multiple husbands, addresses, etc. There were two different people.
I was thinking multiple personality disorder as well but I find it very confusing. It's like one of those movies that ends with no resolution. I hate that!
