Except that she isn't necessarily silly. She may have simply mad e an assumption that was wrong.
No, it actually is a "United States" thing. The dominant culture in this country is to not look or think past our borders. Schools address an international perspective so poorly that it's no wonder that there's relatively little intellectual curiosity about what's out there.
