I have a genetic condition called severe tophaceous gout. (Google images for what it does to the body if curious.) There is now a drug therapy that, for the first time ever, reverses the most painful part of the damned thing, formation of acid crystals. It has drawbacks but it is astonishing how much of a difference the treatment makes! 37 years of pain and finally something removes the cause! Chronic sufferers are almost always giddy with joy when help, even partial help, arrives.
Wow, as a gout sufferer myself, that sounds hellacious. Best of luck with the new treatment, it sounds like a game changer. Good luck and good walking!
I expect my friend would be elated and grateful too, (as would I) but there is still the question of "who am I now without the aspect of self that has impinged on every decision for so long?" It may be a positive change, but you still have to redefine yourself which is never easy.
IRL examples: the AIDS plague and the development of effective meds. And the development of insulin for diabetics, in IIRC, the 1920's. Apparently the lifting of an imminent death sentence threw patients is more than a little disorienting at first.
