It is implied that Rufus gets run over. As for Delilah, I think she serves her purpose to the plot as contrast to how she wastes away her last day as compared to Mateo and Rufus who actually live it.
My read on this was the same as Kenneth's
I think he wanted the reader to think about this after the book finished for themselves. To leave it up to their own imagination
I agree with Nicky ... I think it's better that way, to leave the ending up to the reader and decide how Rufus and Delilah died
I know I am a little late but I think the book would have not given the full affect if we would have gotten that straight away answer but instead it left us guessing and wondering what actually happened
