Good to know. Maybe I'll try it again sometime, but it's interesting that you had a negative experience before and after reading. Makes me feel like I'm not missing much.
My approach to reading is "read so I can make up my own mind". You could try another novel, like Ham on Rye, which still captures his style but it's a bit less explicit (and shorter).
