Julia I do see what you mean about characters biased against her, but Nina has the opposite bias, and her impression seems pretty similar, similar to Alina's by the end of the first series. They are both game players, Nikolai and Zoya, rather than calling each other on it, they'll just escalate. They're too similar in the bad ways, and different in the good ones. I can see them doing well with there separate areas of government, but as a unit: trouble. Were you ever on board with Tolya and Zoya?

yue i personally never shipped tolya and zoya, but i’m curious as to what you mean by ‘too similar in the bad ways and different in the good ones’. not trying to be attacking or negative, just that i haven’t picked up on that and would like to know what you’re referring to, like an example?

Julia They like to posture, and get attention, they play things close to the chest, so that they wind up pushing people into following there plans (I'm sure I used to have a specific example of this for Zoya, but I've forgotten it.), basically they're game players. They both kinda like to highlight their worldliness over there depth. Letting someone see the, vulnerable isn't exactly what I mean close as I'm going to get though, is unacceptable. Alina was allowed to see that a few times, but I can't see them getting to that point with each other. They are both a bit ruthless, they need to be in there jobs, but feeding into that... These aren't all inherently bad, but to close together there could be trouble.
Better qualities, I feel like Nikolai is a little more able to see the big picture, as well as more easily see the individuals. Zoya needs that personal connection. They are going to have different priorities. Both want a better future for Ravka, but their priorities within that and what it should look like will be different. Their forms of courage are different too. Zoya's is straight forward she's a warrior. Nikolai's is of a wily gambling nature. Only one of them is especially diplomatic.

Julia It sounds like I'm knocking Zoya, and that isn't what I mean. She's clever, loyal, brave, and I'm sure very good as a Grisha leader, I just don't think she'd be as good a queen

yue i definitely see what you’re coming from; i had pretty much the same perspective after finishing the trilogy and even crooked kingdom. but after reading the king of scars sampler that’s been going around tumblr recently, i’m a lot more inclined to believe that zoya is a lot more perceptive and politically savvy than i had thought before. tbh i’ve read the sampler eleven times already, and now i feel like nikolai and zoya could really complement each other. have you seen the sampler yet?

Julia No I haven't, I must though. As others have said, if Nikolai & Zoya together is really what Leigh Bardugo envisions, I'm sure she'll be able to persuade me. Without having read it yet though, I probably would prefer a new interesting character for him, another amazing addition to her world, that we'd all learn to love, including Nikolai.

Ar Bay I also think that Nikolai and Zoya will be an awesome pair.. well if not awesome then unique and interesting at the very least. Because Zoya is not the typical female lead. And to make her a love interest for our beloved Nikolai? Dang, I'd like to see how Leigh Bardugo could pull it off.
