I am late to this party but I agree. I have always hated that question. I hated it when I was a kid, i.e. back in the dark ages before YA was even a thing, and I hate it now. Good readers know what they want to read and should be given that choice. Period. My daughter read "Lolita" at 12 or 13. She's a perfectly well adjusted twenty something now. It will be fine.
I should also add (per the comment below about watching a movie about Bundy) that my daughter was also a huge fan of SVU and Criminal Minds. Again, she turned out fine.
