Deborah In Asian society, white is the color of death. Remember the white bird crushed in Yeong-hye's hand at the end of the first part? I think we are meant to see that bird as her symbolic death--the fact that she can't be herself and is being taken back to the asylum where she and her life will be severely restricted. But she finds a way to survive by going within, ignoring the world and taking control of her own body. In this scenario, the black bird would not represent death so much as freedom, the final escape from the body.

Dinisha Kadam Also in-hye's son sees his mother as a white bird in the scene. It could mean yeoung hye, the black bird, succumbs to her dream, but in-hye, the white bird, realizes "Its just a dream" and soars towards life.
