Totally agree. It was disappointing and ruined the book for me
But having knowledge of the father's disappearance is not the same as being responsible for it. Once Anna learns he was actually responsible for the disappearance, she's no longer attracted to him. Also, Anna is portrayed as a rule breaker: she's her father's partner in crime, and when her dad sees she's getting too good at this lying business, he decides to start leaving her out of it; she lies and breaks the rules to get into the male dominated field of diving, she loses her virginity at a young age, she gets pregnant and decides to keep the baby (i.e., become an outcast), and she's attracted to the gangster life because it's a world that doesn't subscribe to society's stifling rules and also because it reminds of her father. Even other family members have some dodgy ties to the crime world. It's totally in keeping with character for her to be at least briefly attracted to someone like Dexter. She's fiercely independent and doesn't judge other characters for being gay, for having sugar daddies or for getting abortions (she even considers one, a huge deal back then).
I didn't get far enough into the book to learn all the details you explained. I stopped reading when she had sex with Dexter in the shed. I prefer stories where there is at least one main character who can viewed as a hero or heroine. Here I did not find one. Time is too valuable to waste it reading a book that I found disappointing. And I have too many other books I want to read.
Agree! It would have been more plausible if she had fallen in love with one of Dexters young helpers (who might have been as lost as Anna). I mean, Dexter must be at least 20 years older than Anna, maybe more. So its a bit creepy too given their history that they had met. Almost like a theme from an adult movie clip; daughter f#ck Daddys friend...
