What are you talking about? Amber was her mother’s real child. Claire was adopted by Amber’s parents after Claire killed her parents.
Amber’s mother did adopt Claire. Why would she tell Amber that she never wanted her? That is what I am talking about-Amber’s mother was a kind person and would not have talked to her daughter like that.
According to Claire she was kind. According to Amber, she was not. Neither Claire nor Amber seem to be the most reliable of narrators.
EXACTLY. That's why I don't like these random twists that end of a book. It gives the author a total out in terms of having the twist make sense in context to the plot they have just laid out. You can't just drop a twist like that and not piece the story back together. The author is avoiding some major plot holes, IMO, and this twist is a total cop out.
Diane you are confusing me. Re-read your comment about the mother part. What Rhinan first said is correct.
The mother states that with Claire it was different, meaning she felt like she had no choice but to adopt her because she always felt bad for her. What her mom meant was that she never wanted to physically have a child herself but feeling sorry for Claire made her adopt her and coddle her since she went through so much "trauma."
I agree with you, Serena. There are indications that Amber's mom wasn't so nice to Amber, and Amber knew she was never loved or wanted by her mother. Amber's disturbed mental state was caused by that as well as the bullying she experienced at school. This caused her to create an "imaginary friend," who could actually be an alternate personality. She became even more anxious and depressed after Claire came to live with her because she felt even more neglected by her parents. Since she never stood up to the bullying, it follows that she would not be able to stand up to such a cruel, manipulative person as Claire. Her fragility and odd behavior concerned her parents enough that they left the house to Claire, who fooled them into thinking she was the responsible and sane one.
Amber's mental state was also deeply affected by the trauma of the fire, and perhaps the threat from Claire that she would blame her for it.
