That's what I assumed, but it would have been kind of her to say it outright, even as one of the blurry details experienced around the time of the arrest.
I read & reread the last paragraphs, trying to figure out if Janie died then - because I, too, worried Tea Cake would have given her rabies when he bit her during their struggle.
