Kerouac - exactly what I was thinking. I was quite surprised that I didn't see any reviewers making this connection. This isn't a surfer's book, it's a road book. He offers vignettes of times and places that were and never will be again. The tales of surfing are less likely to be attractive to surfers, I think, than to adventurous and curious souls who are interested in learning more about the surfing world. The question asks for books offering insight into time and place. One of Michener's works, either "Iberia" or "The Drifters". I remember him going into some depth describing how Torremolinos had become a beat generation destination. There was some insight there.
