I also saw it coming - for the same reasons you listed - but was thrilled nonetheless when it was revealed. I think Eleanor wasn't really healing until after this realization.
I didn't see it coming, because the brutal bluntness of her mom's comments is pretty realistic to how (some) abusive parents talk to their children. I can totally see how it would seem strange to a well-adjusted person, but it's not at all far-fetched compared to reality.
It is a good question of how they'll handle it in the film!
That’s a fair point. I wrote that comment a long time ago but on reflection I agree with that and I didn’t actually find the comments her mum made to not be believable or anything so I don’t think I worded my comment very well. I just very much got “these conversations aren’t really happening” vibes from them. I read a lot of fiction so I do find myself subconsciously looking for a twist when I start out a book so I quite often correctly guess them early on!
Yeah, sorry I got all caught up in this old but fascinating thread!
You're all good, I'm definitely interested to read it again and see how those conversations play out. I truly think I might have suspected too, but I was prevented from seeing it by the INCREDIBLY familiar tone of those conversations. It was kind of triggering! After 38 years of knowing her, I'm still stunned sometimes when my mom will casually drop, "oh, you'll get your way, you are so good at manipulating people" into a casual, pleasant conversation.
I often find that stories of abuse attract lots of "that was unbelievable! no parent would ever do that!" comments, so I'm always showing up to be like, "I am truly happy for you that you don't understand, but you are mistaken kind sir."
Have a great day!
