If I recall correctly, Bebe had $900 saved up before the case started, and the lawyer represented her for free. I'm guessing that's enough for a plane ticket.

You are right, she did have the $900 & could have gotten a ticket, but being able to get into the house, get the baby, etc? Oh well, it's a book. I just don't see the McColloughs then going ahead and adopting a child from China. Seems like it would just open too many wounds.
I don’t think back then you needed a passport for a young child, you didn’t in the UK or Aus.
When I read about them adopting a Chinese baby it felt a bit sick as if they could just replace her with a child who might have similar features and they’d forget about May Ling but people can do odd things when they are grieving, especially when a child is involved.
