Amy Strang What happened to the idea that people can ask a sincere question and not be made to feel stupid? We all come from different backgrounds and are trying to learn and grow.

Readsdagoodstuff Wait where did the idea that people can't handle an honest response from an opposing listener? You ask a question you'll get a response obviously whether you like it or not. my response is my opinion. If someone isn't honest, whether you agree with my harshness or not, how will anyone learn from when we don't call them out or help them understand how ridiculous what they just said sounds to someone outside of their head. It's actually very constructive.

Cheri Blomquist I'm with Amy. She said she was uncomfortable asking the question. You can be honest without being harsh. It's not constructive; it's just mean.

message 4: by Laura (new)

Laura Sounds like the OP, Amy and Cheri need to read the book. Reading about race makes you uncomfortable? Have you thought about why that is?

message 5: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Blomquist I never said I was uncomfortable, and her discomfort is a valid feeling. Don't twist people's words, and don't shame people for how they feel, or there is no room for constructive discussion.

message 6: by Laura (new)

Laura Readsdagoodstuff's frustration with the question is valid, and they gave the OP good advice to apply the question she asked to any other book. Jumping on them for not being polite is tone policing and actually what is keeping a good discussion from occurring.

message 7: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Blomquist Valid frustration, yes; valid way to express disagreement with the OP, no. This world has enough nastiness, and plenty of good discussion can be had without it. I will always stand against it.

message 8: by Deb (new)

Deb cambria WOW I didn't think any questions were stupid. Ok...I'll stick to reading the book not the commentary or comments. That is the problem ....people make a bad situation worse.

Paige Turner "These people"...? READSDAGOODSTUFF is exactly right. Eve is also right, in a way. White people are inherently racist. POC don't need to tell you that. You already know this. Deep down, you've always known.

message 10: by Steve (new)

Steve Dykstra Paige Turner, YOU are the racist on this thread. Disgusting.

message 11: by Reg (new)

Reg Wilkins In light of the recent BLM movement this book is one of the most read books of the current time. I have not read but may read it because it seems to embody the philosophies of this undemocratic and racist movement. The idea that you cannot understand the experiences of a black person who has experienced racism. Wow, therefore you are just shutting down white people and their opinions. This is an absolute betrayal of those who purport to stand for equality. By the way , I am not a right wing racist and I have an inherent desire for equality. The idea that only white people can be racist is bizarre at best abhorrent at worst.

message 12: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Blomquist I agree with Reg. I'm so tired of the ridiculous rhetoric that makes race more important than character and that people cannot rise above their race. I reject it. Talk about going against everything that Martin Luther King taught. White people are not inherently racist. White people do have a terrible legacy to overcome--but so do other races, depending on where and when in the world you are examining.

message 13: by Paige (new)

Paige Turner Yes, white people are inherently racist. Look at what has happened these past four years under Donald Trump. Thank God his term is over today. Oh happy days!

message 14: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Blomquist Are you crazy? Even some black and Latino people supported Trump's pro-America, nation-strengthening agenda and wanted him back! No, white people are NOT inherently racist just because of the color of their skin. Talk about a disrespectful slam against MLK's call for judging the content of character and not the color of skin! Start thinking with your head and instinctive sense of justice and not leftist rhetoric. And heaven help us, now that Biden is in power. His destructive, communist-leaning agenda spells disaster for Americans of all races if it isn't stopped.

message 15: by Paige (new)

Paige Turner HAHAHAHAHAHA! You white girls crack me up!

message 16: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Blomquist You don't find it a bit funny, I'm pretty sure--not really. If you are black or brown, which is what you're indicating, and if you really want justice, freedom, and equality for everyone, start fighting every agenda that promotes socialism and its end goal, communism. Considering all whites as inherent racist is not only a cruel and unjust and regressive lie, it also serves the purposes of the American communists working in the shadows of the left. They like anything they divides people between classes and races.

Don Dealga This reads like twitter thread now :(

message 18: by Ruthie (new)

Ruthie Fascinating thread which raises many of the issues addressed in the book. So I suggest...read the book. Absorb the MLK 1963 letter quoted in the book: "Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating that absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will."
