I don't find them depressing at all. There is something cathartic about defying the odds and making it out alive.
But everyone's entitled to their own opinion of course. That's precisely why there are so many different genres: so everyone can find something they enjoy, whatever that may be.

And in other books too. If someone survives then I wouldn't find them depressing.
Luke, the protagonist, does make it. He's wounded, and we don't get to see his return to civilization, but he IS alive.
OK I have a list of novels on a spreadsheet I've read since a few years ago. In the comments for this book I say "Been much better if **** had survived too!" So you'll be right. But I did only give it 45 which is a lower score than 2/3rds of the novels on my list. That compares to a score of 89 given to Felix J.Palma's "The Map of Time". So I'll probably give this new Nevill book a miss unless it gets loads of excellent reviews.
If you like happy endings then you are more likely to be disappointed with many horror novels and short stories.
If headcount determines a novel's rating, then we should abandon horror for post-apocalyptic fiction. Come to think of it, I rather like post-apocalyptic fiction.

I tend to avoid horror novels precisely because everyone always dies at then end, or it has a nasty twist at the end. I just think it's a great pity that authors completely ruin their novels by having miserable and depressing endings. I often wondered why they do this. And I surmised that people must like unhappy and miserable endings.
But I don't. And I won't be reading this novel, especially with that title!
