Jeff Except a major theme of the book is how certain events (meeting Tinker, meeting Dicky's crowd etc.) in one year impacted the rest of her life. Thus it's not implausible that she married Val, because she clearly entered into some new social circles due to her friends and her jobs she took in 1938. Meeting and marrying Val years later was quite plausible.

Rita When a knowledgeable author spends 1/1/2 pages describing a scene that seems irrelevant at the time, you can be sure it's not. After I finished reading the book, I loved going back to find that section and then re-read it.

L. Montague me too

Nancy As soon as I saw the son's name was Valentine, I knew that was who she married. I had been watching for him since the Prologue when she named her husband as Val. So that became a turning point for me in the story.

Becky Don't forget this book is only a small window into her life. Val obviously appear at the beginning of that year and the apparently later but not part if the book's timeline. Fantastic! Love it more as I read these comments!

Jennifer Mcgown It is mentioned in the epilogue that Valentine is being introduced to her in 1947. He replies that he knows her - he gave her a ride into the city while listening to Autumn in New York. So while the event did not leave a big impression on her - she remembered them not talking much if at all - it did on him. This was after all 9 years later and after WW2.

Graham D This is a typical Dickens ploy; Dickens, the author that Kate loves and to which many references are made.
