I agree. I did read the book after I wrote this comment and watched the movie. I do think she had a life changing experience. But imho it was poorly crafted and poorly focused. The acting in the film was so bad that it cast a pall on the book for me. I think she was in the right place at the right time, she had an experience that could be (and was) inspirational for many people.
