OMG! I am so shocked when one said reading book as a waste of time :((
I seem to recall Callicles saying something rather similar to Socrates in the Gorgias.
Such a utilitarian view of reading, related to the idea that one should listen to "serious music" for self-improvement (rather than sheer pleasure).
One waste of time I can recall. I once borrowed a handful a glossy gossip rags - all had Tiger Woods (or soon-to-divorce-him wife) on the cover. I read a few articles. By the 4th or 5th, it got repetitive and slimy.
