Cristina Garcia I read the book a few weeks ago, and watched the movie last night with friends that had not read the book, and one of the girls said this same answer, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. He's dying before her. :(

S.W. Gordon I agree with Cheree! He puts his wishes "before" everyone else's wishes, including his family, friends and lover. Also, he chooses to die "before" everyone else dies. The title is the only line in the whole book that comes from his POV and it comes "before" all the other characters get to speak. If, however, the title is spoken from Louisa's POV then it would refer to her character development/arc as a result of meeting Will Traynor. Deliciously confusing, no?
