Having this exact issue -- I read almost exclusively classic fiction and am not a sensitive reader, but I'm finding it difficult to stomach this book. I've intended to read ToC forever -- there was a time I was a die hard Anais Nin fan. The stream of consciousness narration is seductive, but Miller comes off as an incredibly abrasive narcissist. Goes on nasty tirades on women fairly constantly as well as Jewish people, Italians, etc. I think the roughness of the content is part of it -- he is uncensored and it makes for a surprising, raw juxtaposition with his high-brow literary references and moments. It's still hard to stomach. Will check out this Millet text, thank you!
