Maisie and James are so real and as such they choose their own paths. James had to fly. It was his destiny. Thank you for remaining true to your characters' lives as they would live them, Jacqueline Winspear.
It was not a surprise. There were hints in earlier books that James was going to die.
Sorry to say this, though I did have a feeling that James would die. I was NOT surprised. I cannot put my finger on why,.
