I mean no disrespect. You said, "I don't want to read a book undone, like Kafka's The Castle." That's sort of like saying, I don't want to drive through this park because there is no hotel at the end of it, as if you're only interested in the hotel. Neither The Castle, nor Dead Souls should be read for the plot. If only, say, the first 5 chapters of Dead Souls survived, they should be just as worthy of our time and attention.
