I hope that you've since listened to Patti Smith's music. If not, start with her first album, Horses. I'll never forget her appearance on Saturday NIght Live in 1976. I had only heard her name and not her music. A group of girls were gathered in my college dorm room to watch SNL (on a small B&W TV with a coat hanger for an antenna). She started with "Redondo Beach," and I was an instant fan. In fact, I remember thinking, "This is new. This is a fundamental change in rock music." And it was prescient of the 1980s punk rock movement. Listen to her version of Van Morrison's "Gloria" – so amazing! And, though her album "Dream of LIfe" was not her most popular, it is one of the top albums of my life of music listening. Robert Mapplethorpe took the photographe for the "Horses" and also for "Dream of LIfe" Also, her version of Springsteen's "Because the Night" is brilliant. I also loved her book "Just Kids."
