I admire your persistence and determination to enjoy the novel. I suggest revisiting the novel again in 10 years... you might enjoy the book more thoroughly later on. I've had similar experiences with other novels, and then after revisiting them later on, found them much more gratifying. Also, every time I reread certain novels (The Lord of the Rings at the top of that list) no matter how much I might have loved them the first time I read them, I always discover new insights and details that make it even more rewarding. Even upon rereading The Fellowship of the Ring again in a few years (as much as you enjoyed it the first time) you will find even more to love in the book. It's like vintage wine that tastes better and better with age. ; )
The books are incredibly dense, but they're worth it. I read through the series when I was eleven and continue to find amazing little details scattered throughout.
I did finish guys! And while i still can't shake an aversion to a lot of the story between helms deep and shelob (mostly ents), it picked up charmed me, and had me on the edge of my seat. I was able to seamlessly go into return of the king and finish that as quickly as a busy mom could. I implore anyone exhausted with the story to power through, it picks up and there's a reason you get lengthy bits, don't give up on Tolkien and his wonderful world.
