Elizabeth I think it goes back to the night she got up and walked outside the middle of the night. She had on the same purple shirt. In my book it is on page 171

Mark I don't think she actually abandoned him, just referencing leaving him alone...that part confused me too, i spoke about it with my wife and we came to the above conclusion.

Grant Galbraith I think you missed something from earlier. She's referring to the incident years earlier where she took the purple shirt and went into the mountains, intending to commit suicide. Then the reference near the end of the book - "how easy it had been to make the decision to abandon her child" - refers to this event. In the ambulance she's reflecting back on it, feeling guilty about it.
