Ken Baer The book says just the opposite about hillbillys being good workers. Vance is surrounded by disfunction and people who blame their woes on, "worker exploitation" when, in fact, many of these people could earn a decent living if they were willing to work. In addition to his personal memoirs, Vance's primary point is the learned helplessness and disfunction of his fellow hillbillys.

Atheena Except Ken it also shows how well they did work as whole foundries were build based on the availability of great workers to keep them running.
