The book says just the opposite about hillbillys being good workers. Vance is surrounded by disfunction and people who blame their woes on, "worker exploitation" when, in fact, many of these people could earn a decent living if they were willing to work. In addition to his personal memoirs, Vance's primary point is the learned helplessness and disfunction of his fellow hillbillys.
