That's actually something that continues to hold me back from reading this book. I skimmed and saw it in reference to her dog and was really disappointed. Otherwise, it seems like something I would like.
The word retard was actually only mentioned twice. And not in an offensive way. I would say teen or 13+. It's not THAT adult but it does have some colourful language.
