Emma The jungle gym metaphor was probably the most useful to me to.

John McLaughlin The wrong metaphor -- a jungle gym is a child's piece of equipment, and why the hell do you want somebody looking up your ass...?? This is about the weakest point of a fine book. Change -- or keep, if you already know it -- the metaphor from ladder-climbing to using a career-lattice, OK? If you get blocked on a ladder, and have to wait politely until they move on up - meh. But if you resort to using a lattice -- step across, go up from there, if you get blocked there, even go down a step, move laterally, and resume the upward journey. And when you get to the table you want to be at -- take your place, and always -- lean in. Sheryl Sandberg is a wonderful writer -- I just quibble here, OK?
