Jon Nakapalau Thank you David...I have a book in mind: They Shoot Horses, Don't They? by Horace McCoy is one of the most chilling books I have ever read, yet I find that not many people even know about it.

Roman Stadtler Wow, exciting thread! I'd heard of They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and the James Wright book, but none of these others. I'll look them all up, avoiding spoilers, of course.

Sharmishtha Basu have you read of human bondage by somerset Maugham? I think it is quite unsung.

message 9: by Pat (new)

Pat I think any book that touches your heart/mind is a classic for you. I love A Little Life and any book by John Boyne. Great thread. Also love Elegance of the Hedgehog and A Fine Balance. These are novels that have stayed with me for many years.

Gineen i've read lots of Maugham, Of Human Bondage , oh yes. i recall the film adaptation being too melodramatic though. My top pick for underexposed treasure is The Damnation of Theron Ware by Harold Frederic. Impeccable? i read it many years ago and remember after being shocked i'd never heard of it or the author.

Gineen and i just discovered Catherine Maria Sedgwick, the author of Hope Leslie. I am saddened she is not known in contemporary times hardly at all.
