You are right, the sex is violent and the teenager is raped twice, once with a broomstick. I can't believe adults are finding this appropriate for anyone, unless they are completely desensitized. A good book for a teenager is "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." It's funny and deals with hard issues such as attempted rape, alcoholism and teenage angst. It is also well written and a classic.
