A person must be subjected to unpleasant stimuli for learned behavior to develop. To the best of our knowledge, these students at Hailsham weren't exposed to that sort of treatment.
I also thought Emily might be a "rebel" as she was in a wheelchair when they met her- might be out there but just an observation
