Domenico Some dialects are quite different but that has to do with geography. A northern Italian dialect may be difficult to be understood by a southern Italian but not completely impossible. Yet, a Sicilian would understand a Neapolitan or a Calabrian without too much trouble. These days dialects tend to be used less and less but during the time of the early part of the book they were used a lot. As education was expanded beyond 5th grade and with the rise of TV and radio, most Italians use standard Italian even though it may have a regional accent.
